Thai Massage

Brief history and origin

Thai massage is believed to have been developed by Jivaka Bhaccha, physician of Buddha, more than 2,500 years ago in India. It made its way to Thailand, where the Ayurvedic techniques and principles became influenced by traditional Chinese medicine. Now there are two predominate massage schools  in Thailand: “Wat Po”, in Bangkok and the Institute of Traditional Thai Medicine in Chiang Mai. Our lineage traces back to the Ciang Maj school.

What is it like?

Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions. The recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the giver and receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked. Thai massage generally follows designated lines ("sen") in the body. The massage blends point pressure and stretching benefiting those who find themselves stiff, sore, and tired from over-exertion in work or sports, or from arthritis or other debilitating diseases.

The recipient of the massage wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies on a mat or firm mattress on the floor and relaxes to the quiet oriental music.

A typical Thai massage is 60 minutes to two hours long.

What effects does Thai massage produce?

Thai massage enhances strength and flexibility, relaxes sore or tense muscles, and can help to recapture lost range of motion. By encouraging lymphatic function, this traditional massage can also detoxify the body, heighten the immune system, and prevent disease and/or injury by promoting flexibility.

Massage is not recommended in following cases:

  • infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds

  • immediately after surgery

  • if you are prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage

Additional tips

  • Don’t eat a heavy meal right before the massage.

  • If it's your first time at the massage studio, arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the necessary forms and discuss your needs and expectations. Otherwise, arrive 5 minutes early so you can have a few minutes to rest and relax before starting the massage.

  • If you feel discomfort at any time, let your massage therapist know.
